Kim Green has written a very compelling book, one that delves into the chronic illness of Lupus and its effect on a young woman coming of age. I am close to finishing this book; the character's story is told in first person, allowing the reader to empathize with the character while learning about the role of a wife, and a mother, and a daughter and a friend who has an incurable, disabling illness. I'll be back in a few days to finish this review. I'm enjoying the writing style of this author.

hallucination is a fantastic first novel from an excellent writer. Green has a knack for description of both character and place that is poetic in its prose. This story feels personal, which makes it very compelling. Brava!
Ms. Green very accurately tells the impact of disease on the lives of families. To many times the illness brings out the cracks in people's character -- including those of the person who is ill-- and families are able to survive. Ms. Green constructed a realistic, loving and simple story of love, friendship, betrayal, and survival around two of our most challenging life events -- death and chronic illness. Good job.
I read Hallucination over the weekend and enjoyed it, although I was sometimes confused by the dates on certain chapters. They went back and forth in no apparent order. The story is about illness, lupus, but also about a triumph of a woman's spirit over it, family matters, and divorce. It shows her coming into her own as a gay person. The characters are complex and vivid, the conflicts are realistic. I was very interested in her battle with lupus and would like to have seen more of that in the book. Overall, this is a good read from a writer who is growing in her talent as a novelist.
I opened the book and was drawn into the story immediately. Kim Green describes high points and low points in Morgan's
life vividly, dramatically and emotionally. I'm present with her when she hears, as a teenager, about the sudden death of her mother--a terrible trauma. Her attachment to her generous, demanding and even violent father is strong. She describes school in New York City, an exclusive private high school with white, dieting " spoiled little rich girls and me- a smart black girl".

Of course, Morgan isn't Kim and this book is a novel, not an autobiography, but many of the details are Kim's own. Her sexual relationships are related in a lively, believable manner. Her shocking diagnosis of lupus erythematosus overpowers her young womanhood and will be present with its unpredictability and fatigue for the rest of her life, her motherhood and relationships. But Morgan comes through it all triumphant, able to find her true inner self and able to manage her future.

It's a fascinating story and an uplifting one.

Morgan's interactions with all the other women in her life illustrate poignantly that even when it appears our friends and family members "have it all", every life is complicated and deeply flawed when we look just below the shiny surface. Morgan's journey to get back on her feet reminds readers that we are all struggling in our own ways to find strength and peace in a world where really the only person who can deliver those things is ourselves. This book was heartbreaking at times, and yet deeply inspiring in the end and I cannot recommend it more strongly. Most importantly it inspired me to remember that like Morgan, I am "a big girl from New York"... and someday, somehow, I will get home.
