It is pre-war Jersey and Tess Picot is young and in love. Living with her mother in a cottage on idyllic Portelet Common the days are sunny and long. But can it last? Soon the clouds of war approach and the Channel Islands are occupied by Hitler's Nazi troops.
Tess's heart has been broken, maybe beyond repair. But like the cottage on the common Tess grows stronger as the long years go by.
Follow Tess Picot as she battles through the harsh Occupation years, loses friends and tries to love again. Will she succeed? The journey is a remarkable one with an unexpected ending.

Tess of Portelet Manor eBook Roy McCarthy

Tess is a beautifully written, historical tale of life in the British Channel Islands that were occupied by the Germans during World War II. It is hard to imagine that it is written by a man because the heroine, Tess, resonated so powerfully with me. The imagery was so evocative and I could easily see myself on the islands although I have never visited them. Roy managed to blend a romantic tale of Tess’s strength, growth and compassion during the occupation with the true history of that period so that it was seamless. He touched on topics, often covered by documentaries, such as the fate of women who consorted with the German soldiers but it reads naturally, as though you were experiencing it. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, wish that I was Tess and loved that the book was written with shades of gray.

Tess of Portelet Manor eBook Roy McCarthy Reviews

McCarthy takes the reader on a journey through a period of history that would test the most stalwart. A young woman named Tess comes to realize her true measure as she faces up to the challenges of being on her own on the island of Jersey during the German occupied years of World War II.

The book has a distinctive feel. Almost as if McCarthy had access to Tess' journals and then sat down to retell her story. This becomes evident in the multitude of details given. The reader is easily able to imagine Tess' life and empathize with all the ups and downs, both small and large. Tess becomes a woman most people would love to know - selfless in a way that is admirable, but not unaffected by her own flaws.

The Jersey landscape is lovingly described. Anyone who reads this book will want to travel there someday. For those readers too young to know anything of the deprivations of the War years, the book will leave them wondering - what on earth would I have done in such a situation? And for those needing inspiration to get through tough times, Tess' grace and courage in the face of adversity will provide an admirable model.

The e-version of this book is properly formatted, with no typos and errors to trip the reader up. There was perhaps a bit of awkwardness when McCarthy chose to move out of Tess' point of view to skip into her mother's thoughts, but this does not interfere with the reader's overall enjoyment of a story well told.
Having family links with Jersey and having been there recently enhanced my enjoyment of this book. If you are interested in the history of the 20th century you will enjoy this book, but you will need to read the sequel to tied up the loose ends of Tess's life.
What a great follow-up to McCarthy's first part of this story, A Jersey Midsummer Tale!

We follow the adventures of Tess once again, now a young woman coming into her own on the beautiful island of Jersey, her home that she loves and the reader will fall in love with as well. With the shadow of World War II casting upon the whole of Europe, we feel the impending sense of doom ready to seize the world. Even remote places like Jersey cannot escape such a war.

Tess is a likeable and inspirational character which any reader would be mad not to root for. She stands up for herself, does amazing things for others without batting an eye, and continues to challenge herself and grow. Even in the darkest days of Jersey's occupation, Tess is a courageous woman who shines brilliantly.

As a lifelong WWII enthusiast, I greatly enjoyed this perspective. Not to undermine what the Jersey people endured, but we don't hear much about occupied lands in a situation less severe than say, Poland or France. It was refreshing to see this side, where some of the German soldiers are shown in a different light, as reluctant fighters, young men forced into debauchery they did not wish to be a part of. All the while the Jersey people, those many of us know so little about, unite to survive, sharing food and comfort with one another to make it through peacefully. Being brave like that is rare and shows an admirable community.

McCarthy is a fantastic writer who has produced a beautiful tribute to the Jersey he holds so dear. Tess of Portelet Manor is a lovely read for history buffs and romantics at heart. Give it a go.
