Do yourself a favor, if you really need to read this get it from the library, or really cheap from a reputable used dealer. The artwork is not to my taste at all. Connor looks like he's ten years old sometimes. Angel is in a constant squint. It's just not my kind of artwork.
The story probably isn't worth your time. The dialog came across clunky and unrealistic at times.
I love Kelley Armstrong, but this was definitely not a highlight of her career.

Angel Aftermath Kelley Armstrong Dave Ross 9781600105166 Books Reviews
Way better than After The Fall in my opinion. The artwork is ok, but the story is really great for any Angel or Buffy fan.
I've read this series through book 6, and this is my favorite. The plot goes together nicely and crates a good story. It's not as epic as after the fall, but it makes more sense and focuses more on a few characters rather than throwing everyone in the world at you. It might help to enjoy it to know that the other characters haven't been jettisoned, and you'll probably see whoever you miss in the next book (unless your favorite character is Nina. In which case, find a new favorite). This story focuses on Angel, Conner, Gwen, Kate, and a new character, Dez. I liked Dez a lot. Though while I liked the story the graphics get a little silly, as the artist likes to draw excessive muscles on *everyone*, which was kinda funny and not that big of a deal to me.
Let me preface this review by saying that I love Angel and I enjoyed the first four volumes (After the Fall). But this might as well be an entirely different series. The dialogue is not at all intelligent or witty. The "voiceovers" (thought bubbles) do not add any depth to the characters. The characters from the series (other than Angel and Cordelia, who shows up for a brief cameo) are comprised of Connor, Gwen and Kate...where are Gunn, Lorne, Spike, Illyria? The plot decides to go off in an entirely new direction that was never even discussed in the series - Angels (or "potentates") who have some nebulous reason for being on earth, and a shape shifting catwoman that shows up in Angel's life for the flimsiest of reasons. It's a mess. The action is choppy to say the least. We go from dialogue scene to action scene seemingly without any transition or reason.
The artwork is standard comic book without any subtlety or resemblance to the characters. Angel is apparently now Asian and wears sweater vests. Kate is some kind of fighting ninja bombshell who wears tiny midriff tops. Gwen's thong is always showing and Connor, well he looks kind of like Connor. I really hope that the comic doesn't continue down this path, as I've already purchased a number of the future comics.
I really wanted to like this book. I'm just dismayed that this is what passes for Angel now.
I wonder if the artist and writer even read or seen the Angel series. A fan of the series writes it better as we have seen with the first four volumes. I wonder if you can just skip this volume.
Armstrong blew it. Big time.
I highly enjoyed volumes 1-4 and volume 6 and would rate all of them either 4 or 5 stars.
This is the first story arc in which Whedon was pretty much entirely hands-off. Given that, it's a shame that they let Armstrong run with the title as it's pretty clear that she doesn't "get" the series. Expecting witty dialogue and the characters acting true to what we've come to expect from them over 5 seasons of television (along with the first 3 seasons of Buffy featuring Angel as a major player) and another 17 comics (21 if you count Spike After the Fall...and I do)? Sorry, you're bound to be disappointed. The dialogue is flat and the characters (mainly Angel, Gwen, Connor, and Kate...and some new characters that you probably won't care about because they're poorly written hackneyed cliches) are reduced to one-dimensional caricatures of the people that we've grown to love and/or tolerate.
This is truly awful writing for the Angel series. If I didn't know better, I'd think Armstrong walked into the project expecting to treat Angel as a random generic comic book title, having little background as to the history of the characters and having only read a brief plot synopsis of events that had previously transpired.
At the time of this writing, I can vouch for the quality of volume 6, which represents a return to form, but I don't know what, if any, long lasting damage Armstrong has done to the series beyond that.
Alas, I read the reviews & heard this was bad. I was so excited to read it to see exactly WHY it was bad, like hearing a movie on Netflix is so awful that you have to watch it. So, to boil it down, it just isn't the Angel we are used to
- The communication among the characters are terribly awkward
- Connor is more annoying than Dawn
- Gwen is dragged through harsh dirt the ENTIRE book
- Angel look asian
- The 'Cordelia must talk to you from the great beyond' trope is overused & expired
- Dez is a very unlikable character (dry like the rest of the cast)
- Kate is totally deteriorated to a Pam Anderson overly-sensitive Buffy-wannabe cliche.
However, it was pleasant to read at times. Like watching the X-Men animated series compared to the comics, it is simply a different take. To consider it canon would be pushing it, but, like with earlier Buffy comics, it is fun to pretend.
This truly could not be worse. The first 4 volumes of After the Fall were amazing. They felt like a true representation of the characters in both art and voice. I was so excited to receive Aftermath to continue the storyline. This book was a steamer. It may have been a different story with different people. The art was comical...and not in the good way. It looked like art out of a traditional superhero comic with huge jaws, jetting butt poses and muscles galore. The writing was flat. It didn't sound like anything the characters would actually say. It was as though Armstrong had never even watched the show a day in his life. Just skip it and read the summary on wiki. Seriously...don't waste your money on this garbage.
Do yourself a favor, if you really need to read this get it from the library, or really cheap from a reputable used dealer.
