I call my experience "The Winston Era." Winston's tactics were different, but devastating none the less. I became suicidal and ended up in the psyc ward of a northern Virginia hospital for a month. With considerable help from friends and almost two years, I started over again and recovered. Whether they admit it or not, I'm sure millions of women over decade upon decade can relate to this story. Identity Thief This Can't Be Happening collection eBook Rachel Rosenthal Reviews
Rachel's story was so easy to follow and fall into. There were twists every time I thought things were beginning to balance out in her life. The audiobook version was fantastic as well, because it really gave insight into how frantic she felt at times.
Rachel Rosenthal writes eloquently about losing oneself in the person she falls in love with. Her kind, supportive boyfriend/fiance supports her through ever so much turmoil and upheaval that she cannot help but feel particularly fortunate - despite some significant personal misfortune following a pickpocket theft of her wallet that seemingly cascades into a larger identity theft problem.
This story raised goosebumps on my arms, and then made me shudder. Stop reading now if you don't want to know what happens! (Spoiler Alert!) Rachel's perfect man is, in fact, a perfect sociopath - but like my own perfect sociopath, it takes a long time, and a diisastrous meltdown, before the truth is out. Her description of the unraveling gave me the deepest sense of deja vu I've experienced in thirty years. What a prescient warning for anyone in a relationship that seems just a bit off kilter. Ms. Rosenthal has a prodigious talent, and a lucky escape.
Full disclosure, I’ve known Rachel casually for many years, going back to theatre work in CT when she was very young. I’ve also listened to her tell this story on podcasts.
Regardless, I can objectively say that she has a wonderful writing style and tells her true, frightening story in a compelling and moving way. The reality of her story is so shocking as to make it hard to believe, yet it is true. And Rachel has such a good and honest heart it’s easy to understand how the events unfolded, one day at a time.
I’m so happy to know that this is all behind her and thankful to her for sharing it, hopefully serving as watchwords for anyone in a similar situation.
Must read for all women... young and old. Not sure of the stats but it's happened to me and three of my friends. Maybe this could have helped!
This story took me back to when I lost MY self. Thank you for sharing your story. It didn't take a quarter of a century for you to move on. Best to you!
This book made me think about how we often live our lives to please other people, ignoring who we really are and what makes us happy, truly happy. Staying in a relationship or at a job that isn't fulfilling, is a waste of life. The author did a great job of telling this story with humor, but also detailed the seriousness of listening to our inner self when we know something isn't quite right.
Fantastic! Smart and funny, sad and poignant, doubt and redemption. I listened to the Audible version and just sat riveted through all the twists and turns. This is a short piece that will stay with the reader for a long time.
