In the Forests of the Night The Goblin Wars Book Two Kersten Hamilton Books

I absolutely love this series! The blend of Celtic mythology with a contemporary time and place has created a world that borders on reality. The author takes the fantasy beasts and creatures of Mag Mell and brings them out of their realm and into Chicago in such a way that it feels like it could be a true possibility. From time to time throughout this book and the last, she mentions those little shadows and glimpses that we all get from time to time and attributes them to those things like the cat sidhe... those things that we can't see but just may be there, lurking just out of our sight.

There is a fairly large cast of characters, all of whom contribute to the story. There is Teagan and Finn, her BFF Abby and her little brother Aiden, Thomas and Aint Roisin, Mameio and her father, The cat sidhe Grendel and the sprite Lucy. This is a hefty cast, especially when you add in all of the other supporting characters, but they all have their place in the story... and in the Wylltson household!

Teagan goes through a lot of personal growth in this book as her previously dormant goblin blood comes to the surface. Goblin she may be, but her heart is human and that is what she strives for. Part of what makes her so endearing is her compassion and need to care for others. We really see that in this book, in her attempts to care for her brother, for Abby, her father, and through her job at the zoo.

Finn is also a star in this book! He is the epitome of a great Book Boyfriend. He's smart and capable, funny and supportive. He loves Teagan, accepts her for who and what she is... which is a big thing in this case as she is a goblin and he is sworn to protect against her kind. He loves her brother and is noble to the point of frustration in how he handles his feelings for Teagan, out of respect for her father.

Things to love about In the Forests of the Night...

--The folklore. I love, LOVE, LOVE the folklore that is such a big part of the story. I love how it is woven into the contemporary world of Chicago that they live in.
--Cindy. The scenes with Cindy in the zoo, with her interactions with her "boyfriend" and the doctor... hilarious!

My recommendation: A fantastically wonderful read that makes you wonder about those things just beyond your sight!

In the Forests of the Night The Goblin Wars Book Two Kersten Hamilton Books Reviews

It is such a great book! I love it. It gives you new stories that are not told very often.
This is a good youth fiction series. Good story, great characters, fun to read.
Clever and entertaining, with some original plot twists on celtic mythos'. Real characters that behave in the often complex and unpredictable ways that teens do in the real world.
An intelligent and creative heroine who does intelligent and creative things (rather than the reader being *told* that she's intelligent, but there is never any evidence to back that up)
I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to the third one.
If you like young adult fantasies then this would be an easy, fun read. Not too suspenseful, yet left me wanting to keep turning the page.
Enthralling story set in, Irish mysticism as the core of the heroism, modern time. Now I have to go find #3 in the series to buy and read. Wonderful story of heartache, going through the trial and growth that makes us traverse the steps on our pathway to becoming whom we want to be.
Wow. This book was so good! It picks right up where the first book ended and in fact I thought it was even better than the first one, Tyger Tyger. I love the characters. I love the story itself. And I especially love all the Irish mythology tied into it in the most intricate and fascinating way.
"It hadn't been love that had made her throw up the first time she'd seen Finn, she was sure of that. So what was it? The self-preservation instinct, maybe. Goblin, meet goblin hunter. It took goblin girls at least a week to fall in love, even if the guy was totally awesome."
from Tyger, Tyger, a Goblin Wars Book by Kersten Hamilton

The quickest way to sum up In the Forests of the Night, the second novel in Kersten Hamilton's Goblin Wars series, is to say that it more than lives up to the excellent, imaginative story-telling of Tyger, Tyger - and that is a very high standard indeed. Combining Celtic mythology with rich literary references and a fast-paced and original plot, Ms. Hamilton has created a wonderful urban fantasy series that is virtually impossible to put down.

For Teagan Wylltson, the past few months have been anything but ordinary. For most of her seventeen years, Tea has lived in a peaceful neighborhood of middle-class Chicago, the daughter of a librarian and a children's book author. But just lately, another world has come calling and Tea has had to deal with heart-wrenching challenges even as she learns to accept a new reality the goblins of her mother's Irish stories exist and they are hunting Teagan and her little brother Aiden with a will and a vengeance.

Having successfully rescued her father from the goblin realm of Mag Mell and the fearsome Dark Man, Tea, Aiden, and the romantically problematic Finn Mac Cumhaill are by no means out of the proverbial woods. Fear Doirich wants Aiden Wylltson dead and Teagan for his own and the Highborn Sidhe he commands are on their way to Chicago to drag Tea back to Mag Mell by any means necessary. The Sidhe are willing to destroy everyone and everything she has ever loved to get to Tea, but the thing she fears most is the goblin blood she carries inside her. Once awakened, it has the power to change Tea into something she has never wanted to be. There is only one way out of this tangle - but how can Teagan defeat Fear Doirich, a creature so powerful that goblinkind believes him to be their god?

There is plenty of action in this second Goblin Wars Book, but there is also thoughtful planning and strategy on the part of the characters - things happen to them, yes, but they also have a part in the direction of the action. The leads, Finn and Teagan, are complex and multi-dimensional and the supporting cast members are each clearly delineated and have their own histories, motivations and fears. The world building here is second to none. Despite the fantastical nature of the story, things feel real. The internal logic is sound and the descriptive language is perfect, all of which allows the reader to get totally lost in the story.

If you haven't read Tyger, Tyger yet, do that before you pick up In the Forests of the Night, then prepare to lose yourself in the fascinating, frightening, fabulous world Ms. Hamilton has created.
