In The Shadowed Valley, nothing is quite what it seems. What Celia faces here is worse than anything she experienced in the land of Dauthus. The evil residing in the valley messes with your mind.

The Shadowed Valley Y I Lee 9781466248366 Books

An adventure must have the hero's life at stake if it is to be considered an adventure. THE SHADOWED VALLEY is an adventure and dark fantasy. The vision created by the prose is at once scary and disturbing. But the reward gained by the beautiful visions of the City of Light becomes that much more beautiful in juxtaposition. And I love the adventure aspect of the story, I became absorbed in the story and flew through that part only to look up from the thrill ride and see that hours had past.

In reading C.S. Lewis, you'll often find a very drawn out beginning that is hard to wade through, but once the action begins, the pay off is great. This novel follows in that tradition and the domestic parts in the beginning and particularly the end are a bit too protracted. When I got into the action of the story, I'd forgotten entirely about the prologue. So when the story arc returned to "present day" it felt abrupt and almost disappointing. Although I understand the need to link the adventures of the young adults to the present, it felt predictable and a bit forced.

Again I stress that the payoffs of the incredible fantasy portion are worth it! The story's arc reminded me of a darker, scarier adventure, reminiscent of C.S. Lewis' THE SILVER CHAIR or THE HORSE AND HIS BOY, but with gothic twists more similar to Gaiman's CORALINE. The strong and obvious Christian overtones are not as subtle as C.S. Lewis, but instead are comparable to PILGRIM'S PROGRESS. All these similarities aside, I stress that this story is very original and not a little bit of this and a little of that. I just want to tell the reader that if you are a fan of any of these books, you'll enjoy THE SHADOWED VALLEY as well.

The Shadowed Valley Y I Lee 9781466248366 Books Reviews

The Shadowed Valley is a pleasant and uplifting tale. The story is quite a simple one, focused more on symbolism and supernal themes rather than plot twists, story line or character development. I found parts toward the end somewhat moving, with a satisfying resolution. The depth of this story is in its meaning, not its plot. Although certainly suitable for children, the themes might be better grasped by the more mature reader. 3.5 stars.
After a fire takes her mother and supposed father, Celia finds herself traveling to a dreary place called Greyache House. But when she arrives, only a cold reception is waiting. The lady of the house and the butler are both dark, fearsome characters, and the only comfort to be found is in Mary. A maid who works there.
Before long, Mary sends Celia on a quest. With a talking horse for a companion, Celia sets off on a life changing journey, through The Shadowed Valley.
Along the way, she will meet friends, dangers, and ultimately, the choice between faith and doubt.
Can Celia live through the dangers of a journey that tests her to the ends of her strength? And can she trust the companions who come to her along the way?
Find out in the adventure filled book for young teens, and those of us who still are at heart.
Y. I. Lee is a talented author with more books on the way. I can hardly wait to read more of her work.
The Shadowed Valley is a Christian novel. It is definitely an allegory of God's continued dominion over Satan and a reaffirmation of the power of faith. It does this very well. While I wasn't initially aware of it's religious bent, I also wasn't particularly bothered by it. But it does mean that I am not the intended audience. I, for example, found the continued assertion that someone else will always save you if are just willing to place yourself wholly under their protection cloying; even if that someone is the personification of the Lord. This isn't a criticism of the novel itself, rather an artifact of its appeal to a particular audience. There are those who will find such reminders of heavenly accompaniment familiar and enjoy the book more for it. The story is straightforward and easily followed. Someone looking for an enjoyable novel situated within the Biblical arena would likely enjoy this book.
Author Y.I.Lee, has pretty much written a masterpiece. The characters and how she was able to tie them all together at the end were remarkable. She leads the reader through enchanted places, makes you feel like you are fighting the villains along side John and Celia..I fell in love with the talking horse who had as much heart as a human and risked her life for the two young teens she was guarding. Added to all the fantasy and fun, she put together a wonderful story line that will not leave the readers unfulfilled at the end. When I read this book I immediately thought about The Neverending Story and how I wished I could fly with Falkor the Luckdragon. Sunrise, the beautiful horse, is the Falkor in this story. This is just simply a wonderful addition to any home. Very well written!
This book was so good from beginning to end, and had me on the edge of my seat and biting my nails, which are far to short already. I loved it, and couldn't put it down.
*The romance of the story was amazing, not overly done at all, not forced, and not too quick. It was sweet and charming.
*The adventure of the book was unlike anything I have ever read before. I was on the edge of my seat and stressed, wondering what would happen.
*The drama was amazing. I felt sadness, happiness, and fear all within the space of hours.
*The characters were so well formed. I really had a chance to get to know them and love them and actually care about what happened to them.
*The ending was perfect. It didn't just end suddenly. It tied things up, while still leaving something there for a possible sequal, but if there weren't a sequal you wouldn't be devestated not knowing what happened to our hero's. I certainly would love to have one just to see this author's imagination on another adventure.

I give this a 5+ star for incredible writing, wonderful characters, a vivid imagination, and a stunning book. I will keep my eye out for more titles.
